Artificial Intelligence and its Impact on Media Independence: a Case Study of Antara, Bbc, the Guardian, and Cnn
Abstract
The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly transformed the media industry, particularly in news production, content distribution, and audience engagement, while also raising concerns regarding media independence, algorithmic bias, and transparency in news curation. This study aims to analyze the impact of AI on media independence through a case study of ANTARA, BBC, The Guardian, and CNN, focusing on AI applications in news production, editorial decision-making, and audience experience. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through AI policy analysis, interviews with journalists and editors, and AI-generated news content analysis. The findings indicate that while AI enhances news production efficiency, it also presents challenges such as algorithmic bias reinforcing filter bubbles, lack of transparency, and the diminishing role of human journalists in editorial decisions. BBC and The Guardian implement AI audits and human oversight to maintain editorial independence, whereas CNN relies more on AI-driven news curation, increasing the risk of bias. ANTARA employs AI for multilingual translation but struggles with ensuring contextual accuracy. In conclusion, AI holds great potential for supporting more efficient and accurate journalism, but transparency, human oversight, and ethical regulations are essential to safeguarding media independence.
